Cytochrome b5 family proteins play an important role in various oxidation/reduction reactions in cells as the electron donor and are involved in a variety of biotic and abiotic stress processes. Cyt b5 proteins, which enhance the turnover of related catabolic enzymes, are important family members of P450. Cyt b5 are small (~15kD) heme-binging proteins ubiquitously expressed in animals, plants, fungi, and purple photosynthetic bacteria and function as electron transporters.
