The GATA factors play important roles in many developmental processes by binding to the consensus DNA sequence (A/T)GATA(A/G) to regulate gene transcription. The GATA factors have a highly conserved type IV zinc finger DNA binding domain (CX2CX17-20CX2C), followed by a basic region. In animals, GATA factors typically contain two zinc finger domains (CX2CX17-20CX2C), while only the C-terminal domain has a DNA binding function. Plant GATA factors are involved in many developmental processes, affecting plant architecture, flower development, hypocotyl elongation, and seed germination. Plant GATA factors mainly regulate nitrogen metabolism and plant growth. They regulate plant growth in two ways: either directly downstream of phytohormone signal transduction or acting as a transcriptional regulator by integrating both light and phytohormone signals.
