The mitochondrial Transcription tERmination Factor (mTERF) family consists of a group of proteins in human. These proteins have a modular architecture based on repetitions of a 32-amino acid (aa) mTERF motif which contains three leucine zipper-like elements, and this has been suggested to be the basis of their ability to bind DNA. mTERFs are involved in the regulation of mitochondrial DNA replication as well as gene transcription and translation through their binding to mitochondrial nucleic acid. mTERF genes are required for organelle gene expression regulation and play important roles in plant growth, development and abiotic stress tolerance, at least in Arabidopsis and possibly other higher plants.
