Welcome to AOX !

Alternative oxidase (AOX) is a terminal oxidase located in the respiratory electron transport chain, which catalyzes the oxidation of quinol and the reduction of oxygen into water. AOX is involved in almost all kind of stresses and is considered a good stress-responsive marker in crop breeding. AOX plays an important role in this cyanide-resistant respiration and has been extensively characterized at the biochemical and molecular levels. Due to its role in plant acclimation to a variety of environmental stresses and as a model for studying mitochondrial retrograde regulation, AOX has become the central interest for functional marker development in plant breeding, which aims to produce plants with high tolerance to various environmental conditions.
